Most small businesses in Leicester pay somewhere between £300 and £1,500 a month for ongoing SEO, or a one-off fee of £500 to £3,000 to get the foundations right. That's a wide range, so this guide explains what sits behind the numbers, what you should get for your money and when you don't need a monthly retainer at all.
The short answer
- One-off SEO set-up for a small local business: roughly £500 to £3,000, depending on how many pages need fixing or writing.
- Monthly local SEO for one location: roughly £300 to £800.
- Monthly SEO for a business targeting the whole East Midlands, or with an online shop: roughly £800 to £1,500 and up.
- An SEO audit on its own: roughly £250 to £750.
These are typical market ranges, not a price list. A good agency will quote on what your site actually needs after looking at it.
What you're paying for
SEO work falls into three buckets. The first is technical: making sure Google can crawl and understand your site, that it loads quickly and that every page has a clear title and heading. The second is content: a proper page for every service and area you cover, written in the words your customers search. The third is reputation: your Google Business Profile, reviews and the other websites that mention you.
A one-off project usually covers the first two. A monthly retainer adds the third, plus new content, reporting and fixing things as Google changes.
When a one-off project is enough
If you're a local business with a handful of services, you may not need ongoing SEO at all. Once your site has a page per service, fast loading, structured data and a complete Google Business Profile, the main job is collecting reviews and keeping your details up to date. You can do much of that yourself with a little guidance.
This is why we build SEO into every website we make. Our website design projects include page structure, titles, schema, analytics and Google Search Console set-up as standard, so you start in a strong position without a monthly bill.
When monthly SEO makes sense
- You're in a competitive field, such as trades, legal or property, where several local firms are all trying to rank.
- You want to rank across several towns, not just one.
- You sell online and need product and category pages to perform.
- You want regular articles and guides that bring in searches over time.
Red flags
- Guaranteed first place on Google. Nobody can promise that, and Google says so in its own guidance.
- Long contracts with no clear list of monthly work.
- Reports full of jargon and rankings for phrases nobody searches.
- Buying links in bulk. It can get a site penalised.
How to compare quotes
Ask each agency what they'll do in the first three months, how they'll report results (enquiries and calls, not just rankings), and who will actually do the work. Ask to see a local business they've helped. Our guide to choosing an SEO agency in Leicester has a full list of questions.
What we charge
We quote on scope after a free call, because a nursery in Oadby and an online shop selling across the UK need very different work. If you'd like a straight answer for your business, see our SEO and AI search service or get in touch.
